Between the years 1830 and 1836, cartographer and antiquary Thomas Moule published a series of maps which were later to be collected under the title 'The English Counties Delineated'. The attractive way in which he combined decorative vignettes and heraldic escutcheons with scientific map-making ensured instant popularity. For this special regional edition 17 of Moule's maps have been chosen to represent the West of England. Between them they cover the area between Staffordshire and the Isle of Wight, Cornwall and Hampshire. A further two town plan maps have also been included, one of Exeter by the early 19th century partnership of G. Cole and J. Roper and another of Southampton by John Tallis dating from 50 years later.
