In 1993 Grizzard underwent 14 hours of heart surgery but doctors could not get his heart started and he was kept alive by machine but several days later his heart started beating again. The following year was beset by medical problems and in March 1994 with only a short time to live he underwent his final and unsuccessful surgery.
