STATED FIRST EDITION. A Fine copy with Fine dustjacket. It took the author 30 years to produce this novel of a prototypical southern American town languishing between the first and second World Wars with the drama set amongst the people who live on the avenue which runs across the town. At first sight the avenue is just another unpaved street full of empty whiskey bottles, frogs and snakes and is the principal address of black people, however it is the same street that starts downtown where it is a significant address for white people with all the tensions that this produces. The author is a black professor of religion and culture and the author of many acclaimed works.
