Brought up by poor but musically talented parents on the island of Funen, this autobiography relates his early years in the countryside near Odense in the Isle of Funen, where Hans Christian Andersen was born. The book was published in 1953 when a festival devoted entirely to his work was held in the Royal Festival Hall. The character and nature of the man are immediately evident in his writings.
